SASOLBURG. – Harry Gwala, Sasolburg, residents learnt with shock and sadness of the brutal killing of Mohanuwa Kobedi.
The decomposed remains of 26 year-old Kobedi, were found dumped inside a pit toilet of a church on 29 March. Intense police investigations led to the arrests of four suspects, and police learnt that the four had plotted to kill Kobedi.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Matontsi Makhele said the first suspect assisted police to track down the other three. All the suspects, aged between 30 and 56, are charged with murder.
Makhele said the according to the family of the deceased, she was last seen on 3 February 2019. Duleng Malema, the cousin of Mohanuwa told Sedibeng Ster that they last saw her in the company of her fiancé and that after not returning home for sometimes, a case of a missing person was reported to the police.
Malema said that seeing that nothing was forthcoming from the police, a public meeting was called and that this put pressure on the police. Rumour has it that the suspects told police that they placed Kobedi’s body in a grocery trolley that was filled up with plastic bottles for recycling. They then pushed the trolley, with the body inside, to the church during the day, before they dumped it inside a pit toilet. Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased was strangled at her residential place before her body was dropped in the pit toilet.
Malema thanks the contribution played by the residents.
The death of Kobedi has sent shockwaves throughout the entire Metsimaholo Local Municipality. Metsimaholo Executive Mayor, Lindiwe Tshongwe and Speaker Thabo Mabasa visited the bereaved family to convey their condolences. Tshongwe appealed to members of the public to cooperate with police investigations.
Shortly after hearing about her sister’s death, Kobedi’s brother also died on February 29 after a sudden illness. Two of the suspects include her mother-in-law and sister-in-law.
The suspects briefly appeared at Sasolburg Magistrate on March 31 before the case was postponed to April 15 for bail application.
