PICS: SAPS busts moonshine and dagga operation

MEYERTON. – De Deur Police recently seized 142 dagga trees, 4,397 kg of dagga with an estimated street value of  R540 000 00, and hundreds of litre of home-distilled alcohol.

The bust was made on Sunday morning, May 31 after police followed up on a tip-off by the Community Police Forum. Warrant Officer (W/O) J. Rost of K9 Sedibeng was requested to assist W/O Chauke and Constable Pieterse of the De Deur SAPS Crime Prevention unit.

A 51-year-old man was arrested after police searched the premises with his consent. Police found bags of harvested dagga hidden amongst trees on the property, weapons, a dagga greenhouse, a mampoer distiller, and large drums filled with home-brewed liquor.

An empty 9mm magazine was also found hidden in a pot. The suspect was arrested for the cultivation of dagga, dealing in dagga and manufacturing of alcohol. Two of the suspects’ firearms, a CZ 9mm pistol, and a shotgun were also seized and a section 102 enquiry will be held. The suspect will appear in the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court.
