Alleged farm attacker nabbed

Reivilo police in collaboration with their counterparts in Schweizer-Reneke, Bloemhof, Airwing, Schweizer-Reneke Traffic and Schweizer-Reneke farmers arrested on Saturday, 6 June one suspect and taken in another two for questioning.

“The suspect, aged 38, was arrested in Schweizer-Reneke a few hours after a house robbery was allegedly committed at one of the farms in Reivilo near Taung. During the arrest, a robbed Nissan X-trail as well as a firearm were recovered,” Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said in a statement.

According to reports, a house robbery was reported to the police at about 10:00 on Saturday, 6 June 2020. On arrival at the farm, the police found a 64-year-old farmer, tied up inside his house. He and his 63-year-old wife were severely assaulted by three armed robbers. During the ordeal, the farmer was poured with hot water by the suspects who fled the scene, after robbing the couple of their Nissan X-trail, cash, two cell phones and a bank card. The couple was admitted in hospital with serious injuries.

Consequent to the incident, police immediately activated neighbouring police stations to be on the lookout for the robbed vehicle while the local neighbourhood watch farmers joined in the search. The victims’ vehicle was spotted at a vehicle check point in Schweizer-Reneke. A car chase towards Ipelegeng location ensued, after the suspects failed to stop. The suspects ultimately abandoned the car and fled on foot. However, one suspect was arrested after being shot whilst running towards a farmer that was assisting the police. He is admitted in hospital under police guard. A firearm suspected to be used during the commission of the crime was found in his possession as well as a suspected stolen cellular phone. Two other men were taken in for questioning. Investigation into the matter continues.

The suspect is expected to appear in Schweizer-Reneke Magistrates’ Court in absentia on Tuesday, 9 June 2020, for possession of suspected stolen property and illegal firearm Mokgwabone said.

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena commended the members for their swift reaction and collaboration with other role players which led to the arrest. He said further that involvement of relevant stakeholders in the fight against crime is key to ensuring that perpetrators are brought to book.
