SEBOKENG.- It was an evening to be remembered when local Sedibeng former professional players hosted a Legends Gala Dinner in conjunction with Sea Of Mountains Trading at Connie’s Place in Sebokeng on Sunday.
This occasion was to support and recognised by the contribution of the former soccer players in the community.
The day’s programme started with the Vaal Legends playing against Free State Legends at the Zone 10 dusty soccer ground followed by the gala dinner later on.
Some of the ex-professional players who graced the event included Steve “Chippa” Lekoelea alongside Sailor Tshabalala, who were at one stage teammates at Orlando Pirates, Thabang Rooi (Kaizer Chiefs), Mokete Tsotetsi (Kaizer Chiefs), Phiri Tsotetsi (Orlando Pirates), Bongani Theletsane (Jomo Cosmos), Pitso Lekone (SuperSport United and Moroka Swallows) and Josias Nnete (Moroka Swallows).
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Peter “Fire” Khoabane, who was behind this initiative, said that he was overwhelmed by the positive response from local legends. Khoabane was full of compliments for the commitment showed by these ex-professional players.
The Vaal legends have been involved in a series of friendly matches, playing against legends from other regions. Recently they hosted Alexanda Legends at Continental soccer ground with the likes of former Kaizer Chiefs dreadlocked midfielder, Jabulani Mendu among the ex-professional players who entertained the local spectators. Khoabane said that this initiative is meant to bring the ex-professionals together and go down memory lane reflecting back to when they were still playing in top flight football. “I want to take this opportunity to thank all the role players who made this event a great success.
“We appeal to local companies and businesses to come on board to make this project bigger and better,” he concluded.
