ELM eradicates mushrooming illegal dumping sites

ELM says the shortage of resources has also made it difficult for the municipality to communicate and follow a regular schedule, often collecting waste on a bi-weekly basis, where possible.

The Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) through its Environmental Management and Planning Department  is clearing mushrooming illegal dumping sites across the municipality.

“The department is also working towards eradicating backlogs in the collection of household waste. With Covid-19 and the shortage of compactor trucks are some of the contributing factors to backlogs in waste management in the municipality.”

ELM says the shortage of resources has also made it difficult for the municipality to communicate and follow a regular schedule, often collecting waste on a bi-weekly basis, where possible.

ELM revealed that the Gauteng Provincial Government has committed R52m for the provision of waste compactor trucks.

“This move is aimed at improving the collection of household waste in ELM.”
