Getaway vehicle flees the scene leaving robbery suspects behind

The suspects were arrested by police on Tuesday following a robbery at a cellphone shop at the Boulevard Mall. The suspects were chased and apprehended by members of the SAPS after their getaway vehicle fled the scene, leaving them behind.

SASOLBURG. – Three suspects are expected to make an appearance before the Sasolburg Magistrate Court on Thursday, 05 Augusts on charges of business robbery and illegal possession of firearms.

The suspects were arrested on Tuesday following a robbery at a cellphone shop at the Boulevard Mall. The suspects were chased and apprehended by members of the SAPS after their getaway vehicle fled the scene, leaving them behind.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi  Makhele says, “It is alleged that at about 9:15, a male suspect entered the retail store with the intention to purchase a cellphone. The assistant at the shop opened the locker and placed the cellphones on the counter with the aim of assisting the customer.

“Two other males entered the shop already holding pistols and allegedly demanded cellphones. The shop assistant managed to alert authorities and  mall security.”

Makhele says the suspects fled the scene using the R59 route, scattering into the bushes and threw the cellphones on the ground. Police and nearby security companies pursued the suspects into the bushes leading to the Vaal river.

“The suspects had a getaway Ford Icon that was waiting for them however it sped off leaving the fleeing suspects after the driver noticed that his accomplices were being chased by the police. Three suspects between the ages of 29 to 34, were apprehended and two firearms recovered. Two suspects are still at large.”
