We are more than capable!

"The late football coach, Ted Dumitru must be smiling in his grave to see local coaches doing well."

The DStv Premier Soccer League 2021/2022 Season started on a positive note with the MTN8 competition over the weekend. The four teams that are through to the MTN8 Semi-finals, Golden Arrows, Mamelodi Sundowns, Cape Town City and Moroka Swallows are coached by African Coaches.

Sundowns are headed by Manqoba Mnqithi, Cape Town City by Eric Tinkler, Swallows by Brendon Trutter, who are all South Africans. Only Arrows is coached by Lesotho national, Lehloohonolo Seema. These coaches beat their overrated European counterparts over the weekend. Thanks should go to Former Sundowns Coach, Pitso Mosimane for setting the standard for local coaches and making them believe in themselves. He has made local coaches believe that they can be better than their European Coaches.

(Mosimane now coaches top African side, Al Ahly, in the Egyptian League) Love or hate him, Coach Pitso predicted a long time ago that local coaches are better than their  European counterparts. The late football coach, Ted Dumitru must be smiling in his grave to see local coaches doing well because he was also an advocate of African coaches. Coach Ted was one of the few European coaches who believed in the potential of local coaches.

The truth is that the number of foreign coaches in the PSL will be something of the past in five years to come, taking into consideration the standard the local coaches have set for themselves. My argument is, last season teams like Golden Arrows, Amazulu and Moroka Swallows gave the teams that are coached by the European coaches a run for their money for the better part of the season, with South African Coach, Benni McCarthy of Amazulu, being named ‘Coach Of The Season’ for his teams’ individual and remarkable performance which saw Amazulu finishing second on the log for the first time in the history of the club.

Hats off to the club bosses who believe in the local coaches to guide their respective clubs to glory, especially former Mamelodi Sundown boss, Patrice Motsepe who is now CAF President. Motsepe believed in Coach Pitso when no one believed in him, and he turned the club into a force to be reckoned with in African football.

Motsepe believed in local coaches and was rewarded not once or twice but numerous times with his team, Mamelodi Sundowns, conquering African football. Motsepe is one of the few who believed in home grown talent and results are there for everyone to see. TOUCHLINE challenges all the PSL club bosses to invest in local talent, in both players and coaches.

We are better than what the rest of the world thinks about us. We proved the ‘Doubting Thomases’ wrong when we hosted the most successful and memorable 2010 World Cup, which was a first for the African continent. We are capable, we have all the resources to be a great football nation and can compete against the best in the world.
