SEBOKENG – While millions of South Africans hit the polls to cast their votes, dozens came out in their numbers in different parts of the Vaal.
Scores of residents in Boiketlong, Sebokeng gathered to choose their party candidates of choice for the Local Government Elections.
As political heads in the region lead by example, elders seemed to be the majority of voters today.
Many came out in their numbers to make their voices heard, as they casted their votes.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster IEC official at Boiketlong Primary School Barry Yika stated that the number of voters had drastically gone down compared to previous years.
Many believe that the reluctance to vote stemmed from lack of service delivery in the area
Resident Rose Make who had just casted her vote for the second time said she hoped her vote would make a difference.
“I used my vote to change things and hope that we will get all the services we haven’t been getting all these years,” she said.
Other residents said they have lived in the area for more than 15 years in shacks without getting proper housing from government.
A woman who didn’t want to be named told the Sedibeng Ster team that : “We want the incoming government to rather give us stands rather than waiting for RDP housing for a very long time,” she said.
In Sharpeville, voters also who also came in numbers also complained about service delivery and blamed corruption for it.
“We hope that incoming councilors will be committed to improving service delivery.”
