SHARPEVILLE.- Reamogetswe Moono (14) won a gold medal in the 50m breaststroke swimming at OR Tambo Swimming Championship held at Delville Pool in Germiston Stadium over the weekend. Moono beat the swimmers who were privileged and training in better swimming pools while his hometown’s swimming pool in Sharpeville is empty and dilapidated. This talented swimmer has been doing land training with his Coach, Tshepo Koatla at the hope that the pool might be open, until they decided to compete under very difficult and impossible conditions. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Koatla said that he is wondering what the boy could have achieved if we provided him with the necessary support especially when the swimming pool was being maintained and well-functioning. “I have no doubt this boy and other swimmers can achieve great things if our swimming pool is kept in a better conditions. He competed against other swimmers who come from privileged background with best swimming facilities, but he managed to bring home a gold medal. This tells you something about his talent and this serve as motivation to other young swimmers that everything is possible regardless of their situation,” he said. Koatla is positive that the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) will do something with their challenges so that the swimming pool can function again to benefit swimming and lifesaving development programs. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Moono was over the moon saying he was very excited to win the gold medal. He thanked his coach, Koatla for being there for him and pushing him very hard at training.
