Sundowns’ greats encourage youngsters to get educated

"As former soccer players, our role is to guide you to become a better person not only in football but also in life.”

SEDIBENG.- It was a memorable day for football when former Mamelodi Sundowns players gave youngsters life lessons following a soccer tournament at Clapham Secondary School over the weekend.

This tournament consisted of four teams and was part of a scouting network for Mamelodi Sundowns. The former Sundowns players who are also part of the club’s development structures encouraged the young players to stay in school, noting that not every player would become a professional.

Esrom Nyandoro and Surprise Moriri were two great players during their days at Sundowns and garnered many achievements with the club. They spoke at the event, and emphasised the importance of education to the youngsters. Moriri told the youngsters that as much as they are talented, education is very key regardless of their talent.

“Look at how many of you are here. Not all of you will become professional football players. That is why it is important to get an education. You see, even for those players at the Sundowns Academy, it doesn’t mean all of them will graduate to the senior team or become professional players. As former soccer players, our role is to guide you to become a better person not only in football but also in life,” said Moriri.

Sundowns Head Of Development, Sam Mbatha was full of praise for the participating teams, especially the last game between Mamelodi Sundowns U/18 and Nale Academy, which ended in 1-1 draw. It was a great game of football displayed with the Sedibeng based academy dominating the whole proceedings. Nale took the lead for the better part of the game until Sundowns got an equaliser in the closing stage of the game.

“As Mamelodi Sundowns, we want to thank all the players, managers and coaches for the professionalism you displayed to make this event a success,” said Mbatha.
