Four suspected hijackers on the run

The police are still on the manhunt for four suspects that hijacked a truck on the R57 route.

SASOLBURG. –  Police Spokesperson Sergeant Josephine Hani said a 51-year-old man was driving a truck from Gauteng province, passing towards Zamdela heading to Lesotho on 28 January 2022.

About 10 km away from the R549 turn off, he noticed he was followed by a white Jetta VW. As it overtook him, one of the occupants in the front seat, wearing a reflector with SAPS emblem, gave a signal to stop.

The driver pulled off the road and he was confronted by one of the occupants. A firearm was pointed at him and he was instructed to move out. They tied both his hands and covered his head with a jacket, said police.

One of the suspects made a U-turn with the truck towards Vanderbijlpark. The victim was dropped elsewhere on the road. They disconnected the tracker and made off with the truck and their vehicle. Sergeant Hani adds that the victim later managed to untie himself and seek assistance.

The police released the truck registration of a white Nissan UD truck as BF 22 YV GP. The truck price is estimated to the value of R600 000 and holding  goods  amounting to about R500 000.

The Fezile Dabi District Municipality Commissioner of the police, Brigadier Mapulane Mbeloane warned motorists from stopping from a place where their safety is compromised.

“Whenever you are stopped by a suspicious person or vehicle, you should drive to the nearest police station or busy area. Any person with information that could lead to the arrests of the suspects may contact Constable Kgaugelo Muvhango on 076 791 5740 or MySAPS App for anonymous tip off,’’ said Rani.
