SEDIBENG.- This was a concern from the members of the Diphetogo Netball Club after many teams failed to honour their Sedibeng Netball Federation league matches due to financial challenges, the matches were supposed to be held at Isak Steyl Stadium in Vanderbijlpark over the weekend.
Diphetogo Netball Club members said that many teams were unable to honour their netball league matches because of financial challenges. They said that transport fare is slowly suffocating netball.
“Many teams sent apologies not to attend games at VUT citing lack of funds for transport including senior teams. The Evaton community don’t see netball anymore because the new administration haschanged everything without notice. There are no more fixtures held at the Mafatsane Court smost games are played at VUT and you can imagine u/15 players paying R50 return for transport play at VUT. In one weekend a team has to spend +- R800 for one division to go the games. Itt will be proper for the league to create an area league for Evaton, Sebokeng and Boitshepiville. As things stand teams are struggling with transport money to attend the games at VUT,” they said.
Sedibeng Netball Federation President, Fakazile Nkitseng said that the reason they took the games to VUT is because of lack of netball courts to accommodate more games on oneday.
She told Sedibeng Ster Sportthat VUT facilities have three netball courts where they can play all the games on one day.
“Our biggest challenge is not having enough netball courts for five divisions to play on the same day. But we try everything in our power to meet the teams half way to see what best we can do for the teams not to spend too much. I understand the teams’ frustration but like I said our biggest challenge is not having enough netball courts to accommodate five divisions,” she told Sedibeng Ster Sport.
