Three Zimbabwean nationals arrested for illegal mining activities in De Deur

An  intelligence driven operation by the Sedibeng  SAPS Crime Intelligence Unit, Tactical Response Team (TRT) together with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI)  yielded good results after the team clamped down on illegal mining operations on a plot at Homestead Apple Orchard in De Deur  on Thursday.

DE DEUR. – Police spokesperson  Sergeant Maria Letsele says, ” On arrival at the premises, members identified themselves and requested permission to search the premises.  After being granted permission, members proceeded to the backyard where they discovered tenants renting a part of the plot conducting illegal mining operations.

“Three men were busy on site with illegal mining activities. On further inspection, members saw a heap of sand as well as machinery used to process sand for unwrought  gold bearing material.”

Letsele says it was further discovered that the three suspects aged between 21 and 31 were undocumented nationals from Zimbabwe.

“The suspects were arrested and detained at De Deur police station. A case docket for precious metal refinery was launched for investigation.

“All three suspects will appear at the Vereeniging Magistrate Court soon,” Letsele concludes.
