SEBOKENG. -The Zone 17 Clinic has been closed and services halted due to a protest by members of the community.
Ward 2 community members allege that the newly built R6 million clinic is now functioning without their knowledge adding that new staff from outside their ward has been hired to work at the clinic.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Ward 2 resident Thabiso Nqaba said they (community members) just want to be treated fairly. He called for transparency on hiring processes and said the community had to be informed well in advance that the new clinic was now operating.
The clinic has been riddled with controversy since the beginning of the project, which was at times on hold for various reasons.
In November 2022, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi visited the clinic and instructed the staff and the contractor work together in bringing the project to completion.
An additional budget of over R2 million was allocated to bring the project to completion. The proposed date for the official handover of the clinic was set as 13 December 2023 but residents say this did not happen due to more delays.
