Midvaal’s junior council launches program to fight drug abuse

The 'Giving Love Back' project hosted its first outreach event  and over 40 victims of substance abuse attended.

The Midvaal Local Municipality (MLM) Junior Council in efforts to mitigate the spread of substance abuse in the community launched the ‘Giving Love Back’ drug rehabilitation program.

MLM Speaker Alan McLoughlin says the program sets out to educate the youth on the dangers of drug addiction.

“The ‘Giving Love Back’ project hosted its first outreach event  and over 40 victims of substance abuse attended.
This is the first step in the municipality’s efforts to end the war on drugs and empower those who are addicted to receive the help.

“Young people who are already addicted will be offered rehabilitation services and empowered on ways to get their lives back on track,” he said.

The project is a collaboration between the Midvaal Junior Council, the municipality and various stakeholders in the Social Services sector, such as Showers of Blessing, Lesedi Labatjha, Jamela Rehabilitation Centre, Lifeline Vaal, COGTA (Community Development Workers), Ward Committee Members and Midvaal
Community Services.

MLM says one of its visions is to enable a safe, healthy community and environment.

“Programs such as Giving Love Back will ensure that we are able to meet our vision of being a people-centered, compassionate institution.”
