Action SA pays tribute to fallen heroes in Sharpeville

Mashaba: Human Rights must be the order of the day in South Africa.

SHARPEVILLE. – Action SA activists led by President Herman Mashaba paid tribute to victims of the Sharpeville Massacre on Human Rights Day, 21 March.

This year marks 63 years since 69 people were killed and 180 others injured when police fired at a peaceful crowd that had gathered in protest against pass laws.

Mashaba was joined by Gauteng Provincial Chairperson, Funzi Ngobeni, National Spokesperson Lerato Ngobeni and Mothobi Nqhatsetseng, Sedibeng Regional Chairperson.

Speaking during the wreath laying ceremony which took place at the Phelindaba cemetery on Tuesday morning, Mashaba said as a fellow South African, it pained him that the the victims had paid the ultimate price but had not yet received the dignity they deserve.

“We must be ashamed that this is what transpired. Let us ensure that one day we give dignity to these fallen heroes.”

Mashaba said Robert Sobukwe together with his followers played an important role in bringing democracy but unfortunately, the current democracy is not one that was wished for or envisaged.

“Come 2024, all South Africans  need to change the trajectory of what happened in 1960 so that future generations live in a better, fair South Africa.”

Mashaba called for Human Rights to be the order of the day.
