Popcru to picket outside Vereeniging cop shop over ill-treatment

Popcru members are set to picket outside the Vereeniging police station over a number of grievances involving the Station Commander and the Visible Policing Commander.

VEREENIGING – The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) in Sedibeng, is set to picket outside the Vereeniging police station on Wednesday, April 05.

According to the regional Secretary, Major George Lofafa, the picket is aimed at highlighting the sufferings of members at the hands of the station commander Brigadier Sibongile Ndaba and the Visible Policing Commander Colonel Mofuphi.

“There are grievances of victimization, bullying, and disrespect that are launched against the station commander and the Vispol commander of Vereeniging police hence the decision to picket outside the police station tomorrow,” he said.

Lofafa said: “the picketing will also highlight the current displeasure of how the government treats public service sector workers by not giving them a meaningful increase, where the government negotiated in bad faith, reneged on an agreement, and are attacking bargaining as a hard-earned right.”

In a written notice to Ndaba pertaining to tomorrow’s picketing, Lofafa said they [picketers] won’t be handing over a memorandum.

Sedibeng Ster understands that both Ndaba and Mofuphi will appear before the acting District Commissioner Brigadier Mbangwa Nkhwashu over the above-mentioned grievances.

Lofafa said they will intensify the picketing should the duo remain in their positions.

“We want both the station commander and the Vispol commander to be removed and reshuffled elsewhere where they can report and be supervised by someone. The aim of the picket is to say enough is enough with bullying in the workplace. If they are not removed, we will fight until the highest court in the land,” he said.

To make their voices heard, Lofafa said all members of Popcru in the region including shop stewards, and regional leadership will join the picket.
