Sedibeng football fraternity mourns

He played alongside players such as Vader Mposho, Andries Maseko, Paradise Sello, Jimmy 'Akulalwa' Mabena, and Welcome Jama to mention but a few.

SEBOKENG.- The Sedibeng football fraternity is mourning the passing of the former Moroka Swallows stalwart Super Mofokeng.

The passing of Mofokeng was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by Love Moremi, who is also involved in the South African Masters and Legend Football Association (SAMLFA). Mofokeng passed away at Sebokeng Hospital last Thursday at the age of 78.

Mofokeng, otherwise, known as “Super” in football circles played for Moroka Swallows in the 1970s and was one of the most talented players to have come from Vaal.  At the time of his death, Mofokeng was part of SAMLFA, the structure which represents the ex-professional players, especially those who served this beautiful game with distinctions during their playing days.

Mofokeng was one of those players who played football when there was no money, but he played for the love of this sport. He rose to stardom when he played for the now-defunct amateur team, Home Defender FC. Home Defenders FC is one of the most legendary football clubs in the history of Vaal Triangle football, producing some great players including Mofokeng.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Moremi said Mofokeng will be laid to rest on Saturday. Moremi said Mofokeng, despite his age was still committed to serving football as part of SAMLFA.

“Bra Super will go down as one of the most celebrated players to have come from Vaal and he played for big teams like Moroka Swallows. He played for Swallows when the team was known as one of the best three of South African football alongside Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. As SAMLFA we are saddened by the passing of Bra Super because he was part of us and he would attend meetings despite his health. We want to send condolences to his family, relative,s and friends,” concluded Moremi.
