Cycling tour campaign against gangsterism in local schools

The awareness aims to alert learners to refrain from engaging in criminal activities.

SEDIBENG. – The Sedibeng Community Safety Forum hosted a week-long crime awareness campaign within different schools in the Sedibeng District.

Under the leadership of Peter Kele, this campaign is a yearly event that was started in 2012 because of rife gangsterism in local schools. It has impacted positively on learners as a decrease in gangsterism has been seen. Cycling Tour is a brainchild of former Groenpunt Correctional Services Medium Centre Manager, Solomon Korai who is retired.

The awareness started on Monday 22 May at Ramosukula School Barrage, proceeding to Bophelong High in Bophelongk and Lebohang High School in Boipatong on Tuesday, Wednesday it went to Mahareng Secondary School in Sharpeville, Thursday was the turn of Dinokeng Secondary School in Sebokeng ending at Evaton’s Jordan High School on Friday 26 May.

Police Spokesperson, Sergeant Nombulelo Mohlakoana said that this awareness aims to alert learners to refrain from engaging in criminal activities.

“We bring along inmates from the Juvenile Nentre from Groenpunt Correctional Services to tell them what has caused them to end up in prison and how they are feeling being inside the prison. This awareness is called Cycling Tour because inmates, police officers, prison wardens, and other stakeholders ride bicycles to the schools whilst being followed by a convoy of cars to the schools.”

The awareness was sponsored by Midas Vanderbijlpark and the Dept of Community Safety.
