Photographer and fashionista fuse crafts to celebrate youth day in style

Two young men from Sebokeng combined their talent to form a team to capture moments as a way to commemorate youth day.

SEBOKENG – A duo of creatives from Zone 10 combined their skills to commemorate this year’s June 16 in style. Kamohelo ‘King Kamza the first’ Mogoere and Lesego ‘Playboy Mapaniki’ Makhete, took to the street to capture monochrome artistic photographs in different locations in their neighborhood.

Kamza, a photographer, filmmaker, and actor used his craft, fused with Mapaniki’s swag during a photoshoot run to show gratitude to the youth of 1976 for giving them tons of opportunities academically.

While many young and old people wore different school uniforms to attend boozing sprees, the two men dedicated their time to doing something worth a while.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Kamza said they (the duo) wanted to celebrate the day differently.  Kamza is a career lensman who studied at the Vaal University of Technology.

Sharing a bit on his chosen career, Kamza said he embarked on the chosen field without knowing much about it, except the information he gathered during a career day in his high school.

Reverting back to the purpose of the shoot, the visibly passionate young man, said the shoot is a resemblance of honor to those who lost their lives fighting for better education.

“We just wanted to be different in how we celebrate the youth day. Our youth celebrate the day by parting and drinking, which takes away the importance of the day. The efforts of the 1976 youth shouldn’t be taken for granted. Today we can study anything, thanks to the youth of 1976,” he said.

Explaining the plan behind shooting in black and white images, Kamza said “The past images had no colour, hence the idea to take monochrome images.”

As a fashion designer, skater, and Instagram star, Mapaniki said he welcomed the idea pitched by Kamza just to allow himself to be creative.

Mapaniki, a street skateboarder, wardrobe stylist, and aspiring tattoo artist said “Every time Kamo comes up with an idea, I jump to it because I trust his craft. I got interested on this shoot because of its significance. Using my creativity in my craft, I chose a wardrobe that will relate to the theme of the shoot. I wore a suede grasshopper, school wears related but very stylish.

“A blue retro jeans, the same colour as what pupils wore back in the day, and an Adidas with a bit of artistic touch,” he said.
