Water crisis continues to haunt Deneysville almost two decades later

If it isn't the muddy water, it's no water at all, Deneysville and Refengkgotso water woes continues.

DENEYSVILLE – For almost two decades now, residents of Deneysville and Refengkgotso continue to face water headaches. But Metsimaholo Local Municipality together with Deneysville Ratepayers Association (RPA) are working to try to resolve the crisis of little or no water to the residents.

On Tuesday, June 27, the leadership of DRA led an entourage of municipality officials including the MMC of Technical and Infrastructure Thabang Rankoe to different sites in an attempt to help solve the overwhelming problem. Commencing their tour at the Deneysville sewer plant, ending at Refengkgotso reservoirs, the group monitored the looming problems that continue to cripple these areas.

While some facilities displayed a lack of maintenance, many facilities seem abandoned, with some missing proper fencing.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, DRA Chairman Glen Mc Carrol said “Deneysville and Refengkgotso have been without water for years now and the we continue to be face water problems due to continuing maintenance issues. Both reservoirs situated in Refengkgotso are empty and people continue to lack water in their areas.”

Tukelo Mokoena, a resident said “we have lost all hope when it comes to getting running water to our taps. Our struggle will not end. We are now immune to travelling for water, as if we are still in the apartheid days”.
Following the site visit, Rankoe shed light on the status and emphasized that the municipality is working around the clock in resolving the issue.

“We visited different reservoirs following a crisis with water. We have de-slug (removal of mud) both reservoirs and we have roped in a service provider to help us with refurbishing our pump stations. We learnt that there is an electrical issue in one of our pumps and we have since notified our electricity department and awaits further updates on fixing the problem,” he said.
Rankoe said the municipality made an extra provision for water tankers to continue delivering water to the affected area.
