Two killed and police injured during a shootout in De Deur

A manhunt is underway for suspects who fled the scene after a shootout in De Deur.

DE DEUR – Two suspects were shot and killed in De Deur when police stopped the vehicle, they were traveling in.

According to the Independent Police Investigation Directorate (IPID), two officers were driving on Weilback Road when they stopped a suspicious vehicle with five occupants in an attempt to search the vehicle near the cemetery.

When two suspects exited the vehicle, a shootout ensued and both suspects were fatally wounded.

Police private security companies responded to a backup call hailed on the radio by officers on the scene.

Different medics also swiftly responded to the scene following the shooting treating and stabilizing the officer on scene before being transported to a nearby hospital under Advanced Life Support Care.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, IPID spokesperson Phaladi Shuping confirmed the incident and said investigations are underway.

“It is alleged that two police officers were in the De Deur area with a third person in the car when they saw a suspicious car, which they stopped. There were five people in the suspect’s car,” he said.

“The police asked to search them, and the first two got out, and there was a shootout between the police and the occupants of the car. One police officer was injured, and two of the occupants were fatally wounded,” he said.

Shuping told the paper that the matter was reported to IPID.

Meanwhile, Cert SA said “Saturday evening at around 21:00, our Vaal crews responded to another shooting incident in the area of De Deur. During a shoot-out with suspects, a SAPS Officer sustained serious injuries. Unfortunately, two other patients succumbed to their injuries. The officer was treated and stabilised on the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital under Advanced Life Support Care,” read a status posted on their Facebook.
