Illegal dwellers perish in flat fire in Sasolburg

Two dead, five hospitalised follow flat fire in Boiketlong flats, Zamdela.

SASOLBURG – A scorching blaze has claimed the lives of two illegal dwellers in a Zamdela block of flats.

The devastating fire, suspected to have stemmed from a heated domestic dispute has since left at least 50 people affected.

As the fire ripped through the corridors of the dilapidated structure, many ran for their lives.

Surviving residents shared shocking insight into how some of the residents jumped from the top of the three-story building to escape the rapidly advancing flames.

When Ster Team visited the area, about eight units were affected with some still having charred belongings inside with ceilings curved in and windows broken.

Speaking to Ster South, family spokesperson Mpho Hadebe said her family is battling to come to terms with their loss, especially after losing two of their own.

Elizabeth Hadebe (52) and her cousin, Bongani Hadebe (27) both lost their lives in the fire.

Fezile Dabi District police spokesperson, Sergeant Josephine Rani said an inquest docket is under investigation.

“According to preliminary investigation, it is alleged that the flats were not used for residential purposes, except for those who would be illegally frequenting there without the owners’ permission. Two people were certified dead by emergency services. The cause of the fire is unknown and the investigation continues,” she said.

Propery owner Izak Spies said millions have been spent on operations to keep illegal dwellers at bay.

“We have tried so long to keep illegal dwellers out of this space. They have been evicted before and the gates were welded, yet they continue to break entry. About R7m was spent for removal processes and still no change,” he said.
