This year, Disability Rights Awareness Month (DRAM) in South Africa takes place from November 3 to December 3 under the theme “Disability-inclusive society for a better quality of life and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities”
Speaking to Ster North, principal Hope Hlongwane said it was important to have such an event to educate the community about the rights of people, especially children living with disabilities.
Hlongwane mentioned the challenges they face in integrating these kids into society once they are ready for the workplace. She said they face a lot of discrimination from people who don’t know about disability.
“We urge parents to give more support to their kids because they play an important role, we further request that members of our communities educate themselves about the importance of treating kids or people living with disability with the utmost dignity.”
Hlongwane said with the help of some of the stakeholders, they have gotten jobs for older pupils.
“Some are very good with their hands and we have assisted them in opening backyard salons.”
Hlongwane urged parents to seek help for kids living with a disability. She urged them to ensure that they get an education to have their independence.
Speakers on the day congratulated Hlongwane and her entire team for their work and efforts.
The event was celebrated through various performances including dance, recitals, and music by pupils.
In closing, a pledge ceremony took place outside where all teachers, visitors, and children held hands and promised to uphold the rights of anyone living with a disability.
