VANDERBIJLPARK – Gauteng Health and Wellness MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko visited Vaal University of Technology (VUT) on March 5 during her department’s Corner-to-Corner campaign.
The campaign graces different communities around Gauteng to offer free healthcare services to young people
Services include health talks on contraceptives, pap smears, HIV testing, referrals for PrEP/ARVs, blood pressure and glucose monitoring, STI and TB screenings, oral health check-ups, and more.
During the visit, the MEC also visited the VUT’s wellness clinic, which sees 120-150 students daily to provide them with essential health services.
The clinic offers a range of services including contraceptives, pap smears, HIV testing, and referrals for PrEP/ARVs, among others.
Explaining the importance of the campaign during the official launch, Nkomo-Ralehoko said “The Corner-to-Corner campaign is an initiative which is part of our broader programme of taking healthcare services to townships, informal settlements, and hostel communities which speaks directly to the needs of communities by delivering services where people are and reclaiming our street corners for a positive purpose.”
A student at the institution, Jey-Di Mpada shared his reaction to the visit.
Mpada said he plans to incorporate more ingredients from the various food groups into his diet.
“I learnt the importance of nutrition. I learnt about different meal groups, meal plans, proteins and the importance of staying hydrated. I also learnt a lot about the importance of exercising,” he said.
