Six CIT suspects arrested in Evaton after Vanderbijlpark robbery

A sextet is behind bars after 'successfully' executing a brazen cash in transit robbery in Vanderbijlpark, but later arrested in Evaton.

VANDERBIJLPARK – They robbed a cash van on Saturday morning, evaded the scene in Vanderbijlpark, only to be nabbed in Evaton hours later.

According to Gauteng provincial Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, they received information about the cash-in-transit robbery that occurred in Vanderbijlpark opposite the VUT campus.

Nevhuhulwi said a Fidelity Cash Solutions vehicle went to deposit the money at the Capitec ATM, when the security guards were pointed with firearms and forced inside the security van.

Some of the cash found in their possession during the arrest.

“It is reported that the cash van was loading money at an ATM when the suspects accosted the security guards, robbing them at gunpoint their rifle and a pistol before fleeing the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash using an Audi A3 vehicle and a Toyota Quantum,” she said.

Nevhuhulwi said immediately resources were mobilised to start with the investigation and tracing of the suspects.

“A team comprising Sedibeng K9, Public Order Policing and CIT task team followed up on intelligence information which led them to a house in Evaton where six suspects were arrested and two of the vehicles which were allegedly used in the commission of crime were also found in the yard and seized. The team further seized three pistols, one rifle, five cellphones and the money,” she said.

Quantum alleged to be used during the commission of crime.

All six suspects are expected to appear before Vanderbijlpark Magistrates’ Court on a charge of armed robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni welcomed the arrests and lauded the members for their swift response that ensured the suspects are found still in possession of the suspected stolen goods.
