SASOLBURG – Following the story of electricity substation crisis in Metsimaholo Local Municipality, the embattled municipality has responded on what seems to be the hold up.
Residents in Sasolburg, Deneysville, and surrounding areas may have to brace for more power struggles as a critical R12 million substation upgrade faces delays due to slow moving municipal red tape.
According to the municipality, the municipality initially set aside millions to revamp Sasolburg and Deneysville’s main substations, aiming to improve electricity supply.
But now, progress is at a standstill because officials are still trying to appoint a team of electrical consultants to oversee the work.
In a response to Ster’s inquiry to municipal spokesperson Dr. Gino Albert, he revealed that the process is tangled up in procurement procedures.
Meanwhile, repairs at the Leitrim 88kV substation damaged by ruthless cable thieves have also hit a snag.
“The substation needed urgent recommissioning, with testing done by Actom at a cost of over R1 million. A further R3 million was quoted for full repairs, and cables worth R1.5 million were delivered on January 14,” said Albert.
Just when it seemed like the lights were about to shine brighter, a new hiccup emerged, administrative delays related to the banking details of the appointed service provider.
Without this finalisation, the company can’t submit its invoice, which no money, no work.
“We understand residents’ frustration and we are working tirelessly to resolve these matters,” said Albert.
The municipal’s mouthpiece said if and when repairs finally get the green light, officials promise an end to the constant load reductions plaguing areas like Leitrim, Amelia, and Gortin.
“It is important to note, however, that while infrastructure upgrades will enhance overall reliability, occasional outages may still occur due to external factors such as thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.
We remain committed to addressing electricity supply challenges within the municipality and appreciate the patience and cooperation of all stakeholders as we work towards sustainable and long-term solutions,” he said.
