Sasol engages community representatives following protest at Sasolburg site

"As a responsible corporate citizen, Sasol values the role of community engagement in fostering mutual understanding and long-term impact," read Sasol's statement.

SASOLBURG – Sasol participated in an engagement facilitated by the mayor of the Metsimaholo Local Municipality on May 16, following a community protest at its Sasolburg operations recently.

The meeting, held with appointed community forum leaders, served as the first in a series of discussions aimed at addressing concerns raised by community members.

According to Matebello Motloung, group media relations manager, community representatives outlined several key issues, including labour-related matters and concerns around the appointment of service providers from outside the area.

“This dialogue forms part of Sasol’s ongoing commitment to constructive, transparent, and inclusive engagement with stakeholders in the areas where we operate,” read her statement.

Motloung said earlier in that week, protestors gathered outside the entrances to the Sasol Sasolburg site, voicing demands related to local job opportunities.

“While no formal memorandum was submitted, Sasol acknowledges the concerns raised and remains committed to addressing them through appropriate, peaceful, and structured platforms.A recognised community forum structure exists to support ongoing communication between Sasol and local stakeholders. These forums provide a formal channel for raising issues, tracking progress, and working towards sustainable solutions in partnership with all relevant parties,” she said.

Motloung said, “As a responsible corporate citizen, Sasol values the role of community engagement in fostering mutual understanding and long-term impact. We are committed to ensuring the safety of all stakeholders – both internal and external – and will continue to engage with municipal and community leadership in pursuit of shared progress.”

Further updates will be shared as engagements continue.
