Raging inferno devours home

Man cheats death after being rescued by his tenants and neighbours from a burning house.

VANDERBIJLPARK – Caved-in roof, shattered windows, charred debris, and a ravaged home. A sight at house number 5 in Boyle Street, CW 2, following a horrific night of engulfing flames that reduced the Mofokeng residence to ashes.

This comes after a dreadful incident that ambushed the family on July 21 as a mysterious fire swallowed the house, leaving a young couple homeless.

But what happened on the day is nothing short of a miracle, as Mzwandile Mofokeng, who was asleep, got trapped inside the burning house and escaped the horrific ordeal scar-free.

The visibly disturbed father of three recounted how he woke up to sparks of electricity next to his bed. With intuition kicking in, he rushed to the bathroom with an empty jug to put out the fire, but made it worse.

With smoke pluming on the ceiling, Mofokeng went to the kitchen in an attempt to escape the blaze, but without luck.

“I couldn’t find the keys to open the kitchen burglar door. Fire quickly ravaged the other rooms. Before I knew it, I was trapped in the kitchen. I called for help from my tenants who broke a window and the burglar bars to help me escape,” said

Mofokeng while shaking his head. As appliances, furniture, clothing, and important documents all perished in the flames, the Mofokengs are left stranded and asking for help.

“I’m heartbroken because this is all I had. Nothing survived the flames. My head is mixed up. I don’t know where to even begin,” he said.

In the aftermath, residents have rallied around the family, sharing their story across community social media platforms and urging good Samaritans to assist.

Basic needs such as clothing, food, bedding, and school supplies for the children are being requested as the Mofokengs try to rebuild their lives.
