SASOLBURG – Trouble is brewing in the red berets camp in the Free State, leaving the controversial Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillor, Selloane Motjeane in the spotlight.
This comes after the Metsimaholo Local Municipality public rep has been slapped yet again with a “resign immediately” order from the party’s top brass.
According to an insider in the EFF, Motjeane, who once held the powerful corporate services portfolio, is facing the axe following corruption claims.
The former mayor was fingered in shady business deals, and a scathing report by the Auditor General. The latest blow comes from a hard-hitting letter dated July 16, from EFF secretary general Marshall Dlamini instructing her to vacate her post without delay.
Citing Section 14(9) of the party’s constitution, Dlamini made it crystal clear: “You are hereby directed to resign as a public representative of Metsimaholo Local Municipality with immediate effect.”
The firebrand councillor was recently found guilty by an ad hoc committee for failing to declare her business interests – a serious breach that landed her with a onemonth salary fine.
At the time, Motjeane was said to have allegedly benefited from dodgy municipal grass-cutting tenders while serving as a councillor.
The red flags were first raised in the Auditor General’s 2021/22 report, which laid bare her alleged profiteering from municipal contracts, a major conflict of interest.
When Ster South reached out for comment, Motjeane was nowhere to be found as her phone went straight to voicemail.
Efforts to get a word from Free State provincial chair Coach Liphoko hit a wall, with the leader directing the paper to the office of the secretary general.
Despite multiple attempts, the secretary general’s office remained silent. A media inquiry was sent to the national spokesperson, but at the time of going to print, no comment was received.
Meanwhile, Metsimaholo spokesperson, Dr. Gino Alberts confirmed that the municipality received a resignation letter from Motjeane.
“The office of the municipal manager will process the letter accordingly,” he said.
