Bachelor of Communication students from the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) hosted a vibrant and insightful networking session at the Centre for Academic Development (CAD) on October 30.

The event brought together students, alumni, and industry professionals to exchange insights, inspire future communicators, and strengthen relationships between academia and industry.

The session was hosted by the Department of Communication under the Faculty of Human Sciences, showcasing the department’s dedication to fostering industry engagement and career readiness among its students.

The event was officially opened by Acting Head of the Department of Communication Dr Heidi Venter, who warmly welcomed guests and emphasised that communication remains an irreplaceable and essential survival skill in today’s dynamic world.

She highlighted how communication professionals play a critical role in shaping society, managing information flow, and promoting understanding across sectors.

Communication Lecturer, David Matsaung, expressed gratitude to all guest speakers and encouraged students to value every interaction, quoting Maya Angelou’s profound words: “Your legacy is every life you’ve touched.”

His message reminded students that their words and relationships define the professional legacies they build.

Among the inspiring guest speakers was Progress Mpangane, a VUT alumnus currently serving in Stakeholder Relations at North-West University (Potchefstroom), who spoke on the importance of relationship building in stakeholder management.

He encouraged students to nurture connections built on trust and professionalism. Mmatshepo Patricia Mathumbo, from Public Sector Communication at Emfuleni Municipality, reminded attendees that adaptability is key in the communication field, particularly when engaging diverse communities and public audiences.

Senzo Mbatha, CEO of Menza Group International, motivated students to create positive workspaces and maintain productivity, reinforcing that effective communication is the key to progress and leadership.

A heartfelt poem by Mnikazi We Peni moved the audience, inspiring them to pursue their purpose with passion and perseverance.

Adding a journalistic perspective, Reabetswe Mkwane, a UNISA graduate and senior journalist from Rea Gazette, advised students to prepare practically for employment by obtaining a driver’s licence, gaining experience, and aligning their skills with industry demands.

Phumzile Maphalala, Manager: Communication and Stakeholder Relations and Visitors Centre at Eskom Lethabo, stressed the importance of transparency and accountability in professional communication, while Phumla Kgomo, Brand Activation and Marketing Assistant at Sasol Secunda, encouraged humility, focus, and emotional balance as the foundation for success.

VUT FM Content Coordinator, Saneliso Mavuka, spoke about the station’s role in providing a platform for student expression and its collaboration with Cooperative Education for Work-Integrated Learning (WIL).

Joseph Manoto, motivational speaker and Audio and Graphic Designer at CAD, inspired students to reconnect with their inner purpose, reminding them that passion sustains creativity and drive.

Reflecting on the event, Malesedi Mokoena, a third-year Communication student, said: “It was an eye-opening opportunity that showed us how broad the communication field really is. Hearing from people who once sat where we are gave me hope and direction.”

Another student, Mamohau Maduna, described the event as “a powerful reminder that success begins with attitude and self-awareness.”

She found Mbatha’s and Maphalala’s messages especially motivating, affirming that communication is not just a career path, but a lifelong skill that builds bridges and opportunities.
Closing the event, Pieter Roos, Communication Lecturer, applauded the initiative and thanked all speakers for their valuable insights.
