Boipatong’s beloved educator shines at National Teaching Awards

Her dedication to the course has placed her in places she has never dreamt of.

BOIPATONG.–  From winning awards at the provincial excellence award in the teaching fraternity to now scooping a spot at the national level, Pamela Moyana continues to shine and raise the Vaal flag high.

Recently, the bubbly and ever-smiling Pamela Moyana (41) made Boipatong proud after she garnered top honours at the National Teaching Awards 2025 in the category of Excellence in Secondary School Teaching.

Out of 10 000 teachers competing for three positions, Moyana took pride in her dedication when she came out third.

Sedibeng Ster caught up with the award-winning Biology teacher in the school’s staff room, where the aroma of print ink and coffee filled the air. Dressed in her trademark black blazer, fused with a pure white T-shirt and confident smile, Moyana shared how her blackboard journey came about.

“I wanted to study medicine. However, due to finances, I couldn’t study in that field. That didn’t stop me, because I then embarked on a nursing profession, although I later resigned due to workload,” she said.

For nine years, Moyana has been the heartbeat of Lebohang Secondary School, teaching biology to matriculants and consistently producing high pass rates and distinctions.

“After completing my teaching qualification, I have been working at Lebohang to date. I’ve constantly received good marks, including getting 100% and several distinctions each year,” she said.

While seeing her pupils scoring high marks in her subject, Moyana explained how she does things differently.

“Many pupils are afraid of taking the math and science stream, but I’ve come up with a way of making them pass. We fuse classroom teaching with new trends like turning chapters into songs, among many other ways,” she said.

Getting recognition has been Moyana’s trail as she has been selected for a number of awards in the past.

“In 2023, I became number one in provincial teaching awards, which took place in Durban. I also got some in the Sedibeng District, taking the same spot.

My involvement in different extracurricular activities, such as being a coordinator of the values in education, keeps me afloat. I’m also an LCO in circuit three in the region,” she added.

Touching on her motivation, Moyana said constant support from her Head of Department and the school’s principal is what keeps her going.

While her recognition at the NTA has put Boipatong, a township still scarred by the infamous 1992 massacre, back on the map for something positive, her school leadership is prouder.

School principal, Patrick Kgalapa, shared his reaction to the awards. “We knew she was going to bring it home. Although we had hoped for the number one spot, seeing her coming home bearing this award leaves us happier,” he said.
