VANDERBIJLPARK – A 33-year-old man is behind bars for possession of illicit cigarettes following his arrest in Vanderbijlpark on March 6, during a multidisciplinary law enforcement operation.
Several units, including the Fezile Dabi Trio Task Team, Sedibeng Tracking Team, Gauteng Provincial Crime Intelligence, and Gauteng Traffic, formed part of the operation.
According to the Sedibeng Cluster police spokesperson, Sergeant Thembeka Maxambela, cigarettes valued at approximately R455 000 were confiscated.

“At about 12:30, members received information from Gauteng Provincial Crime Intelligence regarding a truck suspected to be transporting illicit cigarettes along the R57 road between Gauteng and the Free State,” she said.
“The suspected truck, bearing Gauteng registration plates, was later spotted at Plot 51,” she added.
Maxambela said that upon inspection of the vehicle, members discovered a large quantity of illicit cigarettes.

“A 33-year-old male suspect was arrested on the scene. The confiscated exhibits were booked in as evidence, and a case has been opened at Vanderbijlpark SAPS. Investigations are continuing,” she said.
The Sedibeng District Commissioner, Major General Nkhensani Mukhwevho, commended all members involved for their swift response and continued efforts in combating illicit trade and organised crime.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court today (March 9).
