R47m substation project commences in Midvaal

The project is expected to improve service delivery while supporting local economic development through job creation, SMME participation, and skills training initiatives.

Midvaal Local Municipality(MLM) has commenced the construction of a R47m substation aimed at increasing electricity capacity and improving distribution.

The project includes the construction of a substation terrace, installation of an earth mat, and the construction of plinths and foundations in accordance with Eskom standards.

Construction will further include a control room, fully equipped with the required ventilation systems and safety signage.

The substation project entails the full supply, delivery, installation, testing, commissioning, and handover of the facility, including all auxiliary equipment.

MLM says in line with its commitment to local economic development, 10 local SMMEs have been appointed, benefiting from opportunities in various trades such as bricklaying, supply, and delivery.

“The project is also creating jobs, with at least 26 local labourers expected to benefit by the end of construction. Accredited training was offered to all local workers on-site across various fields, including bricklaying, plumbing, plant operation, and occupational health and safety, to enhance their skills.”

The municipality says it is committed to improving infrastructure and ensuring access to basic services for its residents.
