Sasol and Starfish Greathearts bring smiles to 8 000 children

More than 8 000 children in Sasolburg received oral hygiene packs and health education through the Sasol School Oral Health Campaign.

More than 8 000 children from in and around Sasolburg have benefited from the Sasol School Oral Health Campaign, an initiative by Sasol and Starfish Greathearts Foundation.

Thousands of oral hygiene packs were distributed, with oral health education sessions and practical demonstrations being carried out.

The campaign aims to strengthen children’s health, well-being, confidence, and quality of life. To support successful implementation, Starfish Greathearts Foundation held an induction and mobilisation programme with all relevant stakeholders. The sessions helped align partners, prepare implementation teams, and ensure a coordinated approach before school-based activities began.

Xelda Rohrbeck, Executive Director of Starfish Greathearts Foundation, says good oral health is about far more than a healthy smile.

“It impacts a child’s confidence, dignity, nutrition, school attendance, and overall wellbeing. Through our partnership with Sasol, children are receiving knowledge and practical resources that can positively influence their futures.”

Mandla Mathebula, Senior Administrator for the National CSI Programme at Sasol, highlights that they believe meaningful change begins with investing in the well-being of communities, particularly children.

“Through this partnership, we are not only providing oral hygiene packs but also equipping children with the knowledge and confidence to take ownership of their health. Reaching more than 8 000 children in Sasolburg is a remarkable milestone.”

Reflecting on the programme’s implementation, Project Manager Absalom Sibuyi said: “Working directly with schools and communities has allowed us to witness the excitement and enthusiasm of children as they learn about oral health. Beyond the toothbrushes and toothpaste, this campaign is giving children knowledge that can support their well-being.”

The campaign will move next to Secunda, Ekandustria, and uMkomati, extending its reach to thousands more children and families.
