Midvaal Local Municipality (MLM) carried out its first Take a Girl Child to Work initiative as part of its Women’s Month programme. Take a Girl Child to Work Day is an annual corporate social investment event, held in South Africa since 2003.

The initiative aims to inspire young girls to explore careers in local government, leadership, and public service by creating a platform to gain first-hand experience. During the visit, learners gained insight into the work carried out by the municipality and the various career opportunities available within local government.

Twelve learners from Meyerton High School, Rusoord Secondary, Hoërskool Dr Malan and New Hope Secondary participated in the programme.

Midvaal Mayor Peter Teixeira shared words of encouragement to the learners, motivating them to prioritise their studies and work towards building a successful future.
As part of the programme, the learners were also paired with female mentors from various municipal departments.

“The mentors introduced them to their daily responsibilities, shared their career journeys and provided the learners with a behind-the-scenes look at how the municipality operates. The initiative seeks to expose young women to positive role models while encouraging them to consider careers in public service and leadership,” MLM said.

Midvaal Local Municipality aims to use initiatives such as this to inspire young people and encourage the next generation of female leaders.
