Heilbron gets new municipal home

Heilbron and Phiritona are switching municipal homes from Ngwathe to Metsimaholo after the November 4 elections.

SASOLBURG – Heilbron and its surrounding farming areas are preparing for a major municipal shake-up as they move from the Ngwathe Local Municipality to the Metsimaholo Local Municipality following the local government elections on November 4.

The boundary change will see Heilbron, Phiritona, and nearby farming communities join a larger municipal area that already includes Sasolburg, Deneysville, Oranjeville, and Viljoensdrift. This marks a significant shift in the local government landscape across the Fezile Dabi District in the Free State.

Spokesperson for Metsimaholo Local Municipality Dr Gino Alberts explained that the boundary changes will align directly with the upcoming elections.

“This means that the election will not only determine the new political leadership of municipalities but will also mark an important administrative milestone in the implementation of the new municipal boundaries,” he said.

To manage the handover, officials from both municipalities have set up dedicated workstreams. These teams are working alongside the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, represented by Dr Solly Motingoe, as well as Ngwathe Municipal Manager Dr Futhuli Mothamaha and Metsimaholo Municipal Manager Basi Motloung.

The collaborative planning covers essential areas such as municipal systems, administrative arrangements, human resources, assets, records, infrastructure, and service delivery responsibilities.

“The main goal is to ensure that essential services are not disrupted and that communities are not left uncertain about their daily municipal needs,” Alberts said.

For residents in Heilbron and Phiritona, the transition raises natural questions regarding municipal accounts, billing systems, service requests, and where to access local offices.

Both administrations have acknowledged these concerns, emphasising that clear communication will be vital as the election date approaches.

According to Alberts, regular updates will be provided to help residents understand how community facilities will be managed and how the new municipal structures will operate once the changes take effect.
