“Illegal dumping in Emfuleni environmentally unsafe and financially reckless” – DA

The DA in Emfuleni have had countless complaints from residents regarding the illegal dumping situation.

In a statement on Wednesday, DA Emfuleni Constituency Political Head, Councillor Dady Mollo, said it is no longer uncommon to see huge piles of waste, old house items, construction waste, or used products dumped by the roadside, corner of the streets or at non-designated dumping sites.
Mollo said this problematic trend is on the rise and threatens the environment, wildlife, and their habitat.
“One of the biggest risks illegal dumping poses to residents is exposure to illness causing bacteria. It creates a breeding ground for insects like mosquitoes and flies, but also for animals that carry diseases.”
Furthermore, proactive combatting of this problem would save tax payer money which is currently being spent on addressing unscheduled dumping site clean-ups instead of regular waste collection on a weekly basis which has fallen short.”
“The R28 Golden High Way especially, Boitumelo and Zone 16 has become an illegal dumping hotspot, where business owners dump rubbish in broad daylight without considering the municipality’s by-laws or the health risks that they pose.”
Mollo notes that the fight against illegal dumping won’t be solved overnight.
“The DA will also continue to put pressure on Emfuleni by-law unit to enforce the municipality’s by-laws in combating illegal dumping. We will demand a report from the waste department which includes a plan to remedy the dire situation and submit questions in council to apply pressure on the ANC run Emfuleni Municipality.”
