Almost time for the Vaal Marathon!

Road runners from all over South Africa and abroad are gearing up for the annual Vaal Marathon which will take place on Sunday 5th of March 2023.

VEREENIGING. –2023 will mark the 48th edition of this popular race which was started in 1974 and has become a highlight of the running calendar.

This well-organised event is hosted annually by the Vaal Athletic Club and will again start and finish again at the Dick Fourie Stadium in Klipriver Drive, Three Rivers, Vereeniging.

This year’s Vaal Marathon is a 5-in-1 event and will include the ever-popular full marathon (42.2km) – an ideal qualifying event for both the Comrades Marathon and Two Oceans Marathon – as well as a half marathon (21.1km) a +/-30km race, a 10km race, and a 5km fun run.

This is an event that caters to the elite, the moderately active, the recreational runner, the walker, the weekend warrior, and the beginner! Whether you are a seasoned Two Oceans or Comrades campaigner or taking the first steps on your running journey, this event has it all!

For those unfamiliar with the marathon route, the two-lapper gently meanders through four suburbs of Vereeniging and has a section along the banks of the Vaal River.

While it is fair to say that the route is flat, it is by no means the easiest marathon; you will have to work the whole way.

Because of its fast and flat route profile, the Vaal Marathon has for long served (and still serves) as an ideal qualifier for the Comrades Marathon and Two Oceans Marathon – even more so this year since the cut-off date for submitting a qualifier for the 2023 Two Oceans Marathon is the 6th March, the very next day after the Vaal Marathon.

Entries will close once the entry cap has been reached or on Wednesday 1st of March at midnight.
