Loaded cattle truck catches fire on the N1

Sixteen of the cows had to be euthanized after they sustained severe burn wounds in the blaze.

SPCA inspectors dealt with an emergency case where a cattle truck caught fire on the N1 highway near Lockvaal – whilst transporting cattle!

In a statement the SPCA said their inspectors face heart-breaking situations on a daily basis and this was most definitely one of them.

“The smell of burning flesh and smoke polluting the air, with a sound of cattle bellowing in agony is not for the faint hearted.”

Sixteen of the cows had to be euthanized after they sustained severe burn wounds in the blaze.

“Fortunately, a large number of cattle managed to escape and are now standing next to the highway.”

Our team of brave female inspectors, with the assistance of the transporting company and bystanders, got the cattle into a group and herded them to a place of safety.”
