Local schools commemorate Freedom Day in style

Freedom is meant to promote unity in our country.

VANDERBIJLPARK.- The Department of Education Sedibeng West District schools participated in the District Freedom Day Festival last Friday.

This initiative took place at Oliver Lodge Primary School in Vanderbijlpark where there were a lot of activities. Some of the schools that formed part of this event include Noordhoek Primary School, Frikkie Meyer Primary, Emfuleni Primary, Hendrick Vanderbijlpark, Parkridge, Prestigious Primary, Eligwa Primary, and the hosting school Oliver Lodge Primary School.

The day’s program started with the singing of the National Anthem and was followed by activities, in the form of music, poetry, and dancing. Patrick Thokwayo from the Department of Education’s Values in Education Division was the main speaker.

He said this event has been commemorated by the secondary schools in the past years, but that this year they decided to include the primary schools. He gave the learners a brief background about Freedom Day and what it means to them and the country.

“As Department of Education Values in Education, our responsibility is to ensure that our learners participate in such programs that form part of education. Freedom is meant to promote unity in our country. This day is the most important in the calendar of our country and I want to thank the school principals for endorsing this initiative,” said Thokwayo.
