EFF councillors walk out of ELM council sitting as speaker ‘refuses’ to table MONC

"We also note the arrogance displayed by some councillors of the ANC."

SEDIBENG. – Just a day after Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) Executive Mayor, Lerato Maloka was removed from her position through a vote of no confidence, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillors walked out of the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) council sitting.

Today, Thursday, the EFF councillors demanded that ELM Speaker, Sibongile Soxusa table a Motion of No Confidence (MONC) against ELM Executive Mayor, Sipho Radebe.

Soxusa is said to have refused to allow a debate on the motion saying she will only do so, “sometime next week”, giving no indication of the exact time and date.

“The speaker’s refusal to continue with the previous meeting which was specifically called for the motion of no confidence against the mayor, raises serious concerns. We also note the arrogance displayed by some councillors of the ANC, who remarked that what happened in Sedibeng ( yesterday) would not occur in Emfuleni,” said EFF Sedibeng Regional Chairperson, Isaac Khithika.

He added,” According to Emfuleni’s standing rules 7.1.1.1 whenever a meeting adjourns before it has finished the business stated in the agenda for that meeting, the meeting must resume as a continuation meeting to deal with any unfinished business unless the date of the first ordinary meeting next ensuing is earlier, in which case the unfinished business of an adjourned meeting is dealt with at that ordinary meeting.”

Khithika demanded that the motion tabled against the ANC’s Radebe be reinstated.

“The speaker must call an urgent meeting regarding the motion,” he said.

Meanwhile in the DA, the EFF and ActionSA said that the removal of Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) Executive Mayor Lerato Maloka, in a Motion of No Confidence on Wednesday was long overdue. In a DA-initiated move, 49 councillors participated, and Maloka was voted out by the majority.

Sedibeng Ster was awaiting response from the ELM at the time of going to print.
