BOPHELONG.- Duku Duku 4th Edition Super16 Winter Tournament is around the corner.
This annual winter soccer tournament is scheduled at the France grounds in Movhango from June 14-21.
The tournament is one of the popular events in the Sedibeng community.
This tournament started four years ago with the main aim of allowing local youngsters to showcase their talents to be seen by the scouts. The tournament also attracts the big names, with former Orlando Pirates darling Thabo Rakhale being one of the notable names that graced the tournament last year.
As if this is not enough, his team, Izingwenya FC was crowned the Duku Duke Super16 Tournament Champions last year. In fact, Izingwenya FC is the defending champion. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Molefi ‘Duku Duku’ Mahlangu, the tournament organiser, said they are looking forward to this year’s tournament.
He told Sedibeng Ster Sport that preparations are at advanced stages and he can’t wait for June 14.
The tournament final will be on June 21.
The winners will receive a cheque of R30 000, a soccer kit, and a sheep. The runner-up will receive R5 000 and a soccer kit. Mahlangu said this year’s tournament will produce fireworks, with the teams eager to win the prize money. The tournament is for the Bophelong and Muvhango communities to watch ‘kasi football’, while the PSL teams will enjoy their off-season.
“I do not doubt that the standard will be high, with every team wanting to win the prize money. We invite the teams that are interested in being part of the tournament to come forward. This tournament is unique in the sense that the winning team also wins a sheep apart from prize money,” he concluded.
