Who’s protecting Meyerton?

There’s no question that crime is becoming more visible, more brazen, and more destabilising to daily life in our town.

COLUMN – It’s not often that parents have to pull their children out of school mid-morning because of an ongoing shootout. But that’s exactly what happened in Meyerton recently, when an armed confrontation between members of two rival security companies spilled into public space — with bullets reportedly found on a schoolyard. Among the weapons recovered: AK-47s.
This isn’t just alarming. It’s unacceptable.
There’s no question that crime is becoming more visible, more brazen, and more destabilising to daily life in our town.
Incidents like these not only sow fear among residents — especially children — but also erode public trust in our security infrastructure. When the people hired to provide protection are the ones allegedly trading fire in broad daylight, what message does that send?
It would be irresponsible to claim that Meyerton is “lost” or that every corner has become dangerous.
That’s not true. But neither can we pretend this is business as usual. Public safety is not a luxury — it is a foundation. Without it, everything else starts to unravel: investment, property values, social cohesion, even basic education.
Residents are right to be concerned. But concern must be met with clarity and action.
We need visible policing, accountability from private security firms, and a clear plan from local authorities that does not just react to incidents — but prevents them.
Meyerton is still a place of families, entrepreneurs, and honest work. But if those in charge of security — both public and private — cannot guarantee peace, they risk losing the very trust that gives them a mandate in the first place.
Let’s not wait for another bullet to remind us what’s at stake.
