Ten years sentence for Rooistene armed robber

The suspect is said to have then assaulted the victim with fists several times on his face and when the victim tried to fight back the suspect overpowered him.

SHARPEVILLE.- Sharpeville SAPS station commander Colonel Jermina Mapalo Khasuli has welcomed the sentence given to an armed robber by the Vereeniging Margistrates court recently.

While doing that, she also applauded the efforts of the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Mandlakayise Malinga.

It is said that on May 20, 2024 at around 00:15, Sharpeville police responded to a complaint at Rooistene. Upon arrival, the victim informed the police that he was from a local tavern when he was approached by an unknown man from behind who asked him for a cigarette.

“He (the victim) informed the man that he did not have a cigarette. The man, then commanded him to give him everything that he had in his possession, and the victim refused,” said police spokesperson, Constable Busisiwe Sango.

The suspect is said to have then assaulted the victim with fists several times on his face and when the victim tried to fight back the suspect overpowered him and took a sharp object from his (own) pocket and stabbed the victim on the top of his left eye.

“The docket was assigned to Detective Warrant Officer Mandlakayise Malinga who worked very hard and persistently on the docket to ensure that justice was served. The dedication and selflessness of Warrant Officer Malinga ensured that the suspect’s identity was known so that he could face the full might of the law. The suspect was brought before the Magistrate who found the suspect guilty for robbery under aggravating circumstances and sentenced him to Ten (10) years imprisonment.”
