EVCA and ELM Library Chess Clubs celebrate Mandela Day in style

“The Emfuleni Vaal Chess Association cannot do this alone, but through your support, we can win this battle." .

SEBOKENG.- The Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Library Chess Clubs celebrated Youth Month and Mandela Day in style recently.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Lefu Lepota from the Emfuleni Vaal Chess Association (EVCA), said he is glad to see the progress of the indefinite development pilot project of the library chess clubs in the Emfuleni area.

He also said that during the school holidays, the EVCA, along with the ELM library chess clubs, celebrated Youth Month and Mandela Day in style by hosting four chess events during June and July. The two preparatory events were held at Zone 7 Library, with the second tournament taking place at Rus-ter-Vaal Community Hall, which formed part of celebrating Mandela Day.

Lepota said there were three sections in each of the events, with prizes awarded for the top six players in each category. The trophies were awarded to the youngest player in each respective section. Jedidiah Jacobs and Zeyandre Jacobs received these trophies in the boys’ and girls’ categories.

Lepota told Sedibeng Ster Sport that it is time to involve the other two Sedibeng municipalities, which are Midvaal and Lesedi Local Municipalities, to be part of the ongoing libraries chess programme. He said the EVCA is prepared to ensure that Sedibeng has mass participation in chess and that the players get to play rated tournaments so that they can receive their municipality colours and regional colours like in other districts.

“The Emfuleni Vaal Chess Association cannot do this alone, but through your support, we can win this battle, whilst perseverance conquers. I have no doubt we will reach the level of expectation with everyone’s support. It is a work in progress, and I’m happy with the progress we’re making. It is just a matter of time before we harvest the fruit of our success,” he said.
