Ex-Pirates Captain makes correct prediction
"I told you guys when I was there in Vaal that Pirates was going to beat Sundowns."
SEDIBENG.- Orlando Pirates made history on Saturday when they reached the MTN8 finals for the fourth time (year) in a row.
They achieved this in the expenses of Mamelodi Sundowns when they beat them 4-1 (2-2 full time score) on penalties at a packed Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, Pretoria on Saturday.
The game was seen as mission impossible, for Pirates to beat Sundowns in their own back yard. Pirates and Sundowns came into this game levelled at 1-1 from the first leg that was played at Orlando Stadium a week ago. This past weekend’s game was decided on penalties after a full-time score aggregate score of 2-2.
This counter started with a build up with MTN8 ambassadors, Brent Carelse and Lucky Lekgwathi visiting Sedibeng (Vaal) to mobilise soccer fans ahead of this much anticipated second leg Semi-final. Former, Orlando Pirates Captain Lucky Lekgwathi made a bold prediction that his team was going to be in the final again, for the fourth time, and indeed they are.
Lekgwathi told Sedibeng Ster at a media briefing held at MooiVaal Media offices prior to this encounter, that Pirates will come back strongly to beat Sundowns, which they did on Saturday. The two made some bold predictions with Carelse getting it wrong.
He had predicted that Sekhukhune United would come back to beat Stellenbosch after the latter beat them 2-0 in the first leg semi-final. The sides played to a 1-1 draw in a second match Semi-final at Peter Mokaba Stadium, also on Saturday.
This is a repeat of last year’s final, with Pirates up against Stellies.
“I told you guys when I was there, in Vaal, that Pirates was going to beat Sundowns. I knew my team was going to come back and I must say, I’m very impressed how they played on the day compared to the first leg. You could tell how much these players wanted to write history for themselves. Playing in the final for the four times (in a row) is a remarkable achievement for the club. I think this is the first time something like this happens in the history of South African football. But I stand to be corrected. I have no doubt that both teams’ supporters went home happy because they were entertained at the end of the day,” said Lekgwathi.
The date and venue for the final will be announced at the later stage.
