LGBTQIA+ (Pride) Fun Walk and Talk

The event marked the first of what will become an annual occasion dedicated to combatting GBV against the LGBTQIA+ Community.

SEBOKENG.- The Sebokeng Police, together with different stakeholders, hosted a collaborative event at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Centre on Friday to address gender-based crimes affecting the LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Asexual, and Aromantic) community.

Prince Kubheka, from the Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Public Participation and Petitions Unit, encouraged the LGBTQIA+ community to take an active role in awareness campaigns, as their involvement will reach the masses.

“No discrimination against our brothers and sisters will be taken lightly, not only for this season but every day.”

Warrant Officer Matlaletsa, from Sebokeng FCS (Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences), informed the attendees about the importance of handling LGBTQIA+ related cases. He outlined that most community members are still not sensitised about gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), and he strongly believes that through awareness, the community will gain knowledge.

On the other hand, Brigadier Thembekile Kubone emphasised that South Africa has a national strategic plan to end GBVF that aims for accountability, prevention, justice, and response, which must actively include the LGBTQIA+ community.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Nthabiseng Mokhachane, said individuals can report incidents to the police, seek protection orders, and access legal aid through organisations like Legal Aid South Africa.

“Support networks, shelters, and specialised legal services can also assist survivors. Raising awareness about the specific forms of GBV targeting the LGBTQIA+ community is crucial to combatting violence and changing attitudes. Furthermore, research is needed to fully understand LGBTQIA+ experiences, especially for trans individuals, to strengthen prevention and response strategies.”

The event marked the first of what will become an annual occasion dedicated to combatting GBV against the LGBTQIA+ Community.
