SEDIBENG.- The year is almost over, and it’s that time when Zakes’ Sports Corner reflects on the year and looks to the future.
The big question is, what have we achieved as a region in sports?
While Zakes’ Sports Corner is not into New Year’s resolutions, I feel strongly that there were some positive developments in local sport, especially in football.
Young Pirates FC is one of the notable stories, as they were promoted to the ABC Motsepe League and remarkably, are among the top three teams on the log standings.
Another outstanding achievement was the selection of two of our local boys for the junior national teams for the COSAFA Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations.
In addition, Relebohile Mofokeng and Tshepang Moremi, both from Sharpeville, continued to hoist the Sedibeng flag high in top-flight football with their Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana. Their performances suggest they may well form part of the national squad for the FIFA World Cup.
Having said this, sporting facilities, especially in Emfuleni, are a major concern. Throughout the year, Zakes’ Sports Corner highlighted the issues of sporting facilities, but it fell on deaf ears.
It is no secret that the sporting facilities under the Emfuleni Local Municipality are deteriorating. Something must be done to rectify this situation because everyone goes to Midvaal. Zakes’ Sports Corner wishes to see sporting facilities being maintained in 2026. As a region, we are better than that. The Vaal has a rich history in sports, particularly football and boxing.
