Sharpeville duo in Bafana Bafana’s AFCON Preliminary Squad

“We are all proud of these two boys, and some of us witnessed their talent at a very young age."

SHARPEVILLE.- The two local boys, Relebohile Mofokeng and Tshepang Moremi, are in Bafana Bafana’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Preliminary Squad.

These Sharpeville-born youngsters are part of a 52-man squad that head coach Hugo Broos has named in preparation for the AFCON tournament in December. The two have been outstanding for their club, Orlando Pirates, this season.

They have been carrying the club on their shoulders game after game, with Mofokeng just making an impressive comeback from an injury, while Moremi has been scoring goals like they are going out of fashion for the Mighty Buccaneers.

Mofokeng started his amateur football career playing for Celeb Youth Academy, while Moremi played for Sharpeville Benfica FC.

The two were outstanding in the game where Pirates beat Chippa United 2-0 in the midweek Betway Premiership at Orlando Stadium. Both were all over United, with Mofokeng being instrumental in assisting the first goal. In fact, Moremi also contributed to the first goal without touching the ball. It was an exchange of off-the-ball movement between the two, resulting in a goal, and the Pirates’ faithful went crazy.

No doubt the two will be part of the Bafana Bafana squad that will participate in this continental tournament if their current performance is anything to go by. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Paul Motsepe, who coached Moremi at Benfica, said this is great news. He told Sedibeng Ster Sport that the two boys have put not only Sharpeville but the whole Vaal Triangle on the map.

“We are all proud of these two boys, and some of us witnessed their talent at a very young age. I always knew that one day they would make the Sharpeville community proud in a special way. Buda (Tshepang Moremi) grew up next to me, and he was one of those youngsters who was always eager to learn. He is a hard worker of note, and I’m not surprised to see him where he is now,” said Motsepe.
